IHRC Students Conclude Working Visit in Costa Rica

OU Law students enrolled in the International Human Rights Clinic (IHRC) – Kristen Fling, Caitlin Vance, Johanna Roberts Vance, and Sydney Abdallah – undertook a working visit to the Republic of Costa Rica from May 7–18, 2017 to study the new process the Government is carrying out in regards to the right of indigenous peoples to prior consultations. They were accompanied by Professor Lindsay Robertson and Alvaro Baca.

Prof. Evelyn Aswad Participates in State Department Advisory Committee on International Law

Earlier this month, OU Law Prof. Evelyn Aswad participated in the U.S. State Department’s Advisory Committee on International Law (ACIL), which is composed of former Legal Advisers to various Secretaries of State, international law professors, and private sector attorneys. Prof. Aswad served as a lead speaker on issues at the intersection of human rights, international business, and social media. Other issues discussed at the meeting included legal challenges to UN economic sanctions regimes as well as the Syrian civil war.

Prof. Robert Spector to Represent U.S. at The Hague

Professor Emeritus Robert G. Spector will represent the United States at The Hague Conference of Private International Law's Experts Group on the Recognition and Enforcement of Agreements in Family Disputes Involving Children. The Experts Group will meet in The Hague June 14-17, 2017. The purpose of the Experts Group is to examine and identify the nature and extent of the legal and practical problems, including jurisdictional issues, involving cross border recognition and enforcement of voluntary agreements and to evaluate the benefit of a new international treaty in this area.

Human Rights Practicum Goes to Belgium to Attend International Conference

Professor Aswad’s Human Rights Practicum class has spent the Spring 2017 semester working on a Diplomacy Lab project for the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria. Diplomacy Lab is a U.S. Department of State program that provides the opportunity for universities to help the Department with pressing research needs on foreign affairs matters.
